Georiga Jeann Loebrich Schaich

January 5, 1945 - November 1, 2019

Georgia (Loebrich) Schaich, beautiful, generous, joyful - mother, wife, extraordinary woman, and community force slipped the bonds of consciousness on November 1, 2019.

Georgia was born in Maumee, Ohio while her father and namesake, George, was still away in Army service during WWII. Her mother Eva (Blue) Loebrich cared for her in the home George had built, without running water, hoping his namesake would know him on his return. As a young girl, before sitting down to the family dinner, Georgia would deliver plates of food prepared by her mother to the elderly homebound couple down the street affectionately known as Grandma and Grandpa Andrews. She also played accordion at local nursing homes. The course of her life would continue along this theme of service and caring for others, especially our elder population.

Georgia was a joiner who reveled in collaboration. Once a part of a club or group, she would become its biggest cheerleader. She was a Girl Scout and attended Camp Libby along the Maumee River. During high school she was active in many clubs, marched in the band playing snare drum or triangle, cheered on Maumee High School squads, and was the first in her family to attend college. She married Bill Schaich, who she had first met in 6th grade, in December 1966 while completing a degree in elementary education. She then taught kindergarten for 3 years in Newfield, NY.

Husband Bill’s studies and career took Georgia to live for a time in Ithaca, NY, Bristol, England, La Jolla, CA, Jülich, Germany, Bozeman, MT and Orlando, FL. Bloomington, Indiana was her home for over 46 years; the community both strengthened and received her gifts.

As her daughters grew, so did Georgia’s community involvement. After delivering Meals on Wheels, she stepped up to lead their Girl Scout troop #65. Scouting provided mentoring and leadership development which Georgia would continue to apply and pass on throughout her career. The troop leader role evolved to co-directing day camp, then serving as president of the Tulip Trace Council from 1987-90.

She joined the workforce as a Civic Newcomer hostess in 1981, welcoming families to the area. She next moved to a position as a nursing home activity director for several years.

Georgia found her true vocation in the role of RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program) director for Area 10 where she served from 1989-2005. She delighted in the friendships and comradery formed while finding ways to celebrate and acknowledge the wisdom and skills of the senior members of our community.

Georgia was dedicated to making the world a better place. Her calm and steady presence was the cornerstone for projects ranging from neighborhood organizing to the promotion of global peace. Her community work was always imbued with a sense of purpose, empathy, and integrity. And the sparkle in her eyes let you know that anything was possible if we worked together. She personified kindness, generosity, wisdom, perspective, determination, creativity, and a good dose of light-heartedness.

She did this despite the challenges in her later years of Parkinson's Disease. Georgia did not let any of it stop her, saying, "This is my journey, and I will do this to the best of my ability, until I can no longer do".

Georgia will continue to live in the hearts of her devoted husband of 53 years, her children, Amy Schaich (Gregory O’Neill), and Lucy Schaich (Sean Pendergast); her siblings Gale Loebrich (Ann), Sarah Bitter (Donn), and Susan Johns; siblings-in-law Seren Bradshaw (Larry), Terry Schaich (Wendlyn), Tom Schaich (Wendy), Bob Schaich (Rosemarie, “Ro”); her nieces and nephews, and many, many friends, collaborators, and partners in service and community.

She will always and forever be with us. We will always and forever be better because of her. Her life reminds each of us of our power to make a difference. We ask that you honor her memory by sharing your own gifts with your community in a way that is meaningful to you.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it's the only thing that ever has.” Margaret Mead

A Celebration of Life gathering to share memories of Georgia will be announced at a later date.

MC KENZIE David William, age 75, formerly of Maumee, OH and Bowling Green, OH, passed away Friday May 29, 2020, at his Devils Lake home in Manitou Beach, MI, surrounded by family. Dave was a 1963 graduate of Maumee High School, Maumee, OH and attended Bowling Green State University, earning a degree in education. He married Martha (Marty) Heilman August 5, 1967. They proudly celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2017.

Dave served honorably in the United States Air Force serving our country during Vietnam from 10/1968 to 1/1973 achieving the rank of Captain. During his time in the Air Force he spent a year at the North Pole and the Dew Line as an air traffic controller (“Scope Dope”) monitoring planes flying over from Russia.

Dave spent many years working for Owens Corning Fiberglas throughout the Midwest but found his passion in building custom homes. He started a small business in Bowling Green, McKenzie Builders and Developers, developing his grandparents farm with his Uncle Roger McKenzie.

Dave enjoyed teaching his children the craft of building things with their own two hands. Truly a skill they will use for many years to come. He also enjoyed his time serving on the board at the Bowling Green Country Club, his memberships with The Eagles, and Ducks Unlimited.

While Dave never truly considered himself retired, he did call his property at Devils Lake, that he and his father developed together, his retirement home. Devils Lake provided Dave a sense of peace and brought his family a lifetime of pleasure, whether it be boating in the summer or snowmobiling in the winter. He especially valued the camaraderie that came along with hosting his friends at the dock parties each spring!

Dave did his best to winter in St. Petersburg, FL, where he enjoyed a glass of wine with family and friends, watching the sunset from the balcony of the condo.

He truly lived life to the fullest, as it was rare for him to say “no” to any new adventure or challenge: The response was usually, “Hell yes, let’s do it!”

Pam Scott Fetters

April 25, 1945 - April 26, 2019  (74)

Pam Scott Fetters

Businesswoman remembered for community service, love

WOODSTOCK TWP. — A longtime fixture in the Woodstock Township community is being remembered for her dedication to the community and love for others.

Pamela Fetters, who owned Admiral Woody’s Treasure Chest and co-owned Woodstock Wine and Cheese with her son, Bill, died April 26, one day after her 74th birthday.

Fetters’ son, Bill, said Tuesday that her death following a short period of failing health was “unexpected but expected at the same time,” but that he takes comfort in her approach to life and death.

“She had an understanding of the reality of life,” he said in between a steady flow of visitors to Woodstock Wine and Cheese to offer condolences. “To her, death was not a big deal. She always had a great respect for life and death and was never scared of it. She was a big believer in the (teachings of the) Tibetan book of the dead, and I take comfort in that.”

Fetters said his mother was known by many to be a nurturing, caring lady, “but a hardnose” at the same time, a smart and savvy businesswoman who was generous but who would not be taken advantage of.

“She loved many, trusted few; that was a credo of hers,” Fetters said.

However, he said, his mother had an unwavering passion for helping people and animals.

“If someone was in distress, she would want to make it right, at her expense but without any glory,” Fetters said. “She would go around at the holidays and drop coats on people’s doorsteps if she knew they needed one but were too proud to ask, just for her own comfort to know someone was being taken care of.”

Pam Fetters ran the Woodstock Wine and Cheese store for 35 years, with many of those years with her son and grandson at her side. She also owned and operated Admiral Woody’s Treasure Chest next door, and formerly owned Woody’s Wiggly Worms located down the road along U.S. 223.

Fetters also sat on the Woodstock Township Board of Review, and was a member of the Land and Lake Ladies Club, as well as the Brooklyn-Irish Hills Chamber of Commerce.

Woodstock Township Supervisor Matt SeGraves said Tuesday that Fetters “was respected and well-liked by the residents whom she represented or considered when they came in to the board of review.”

“She worked well with others in her capacity,” SeGraves said. “They all enjoyed working with her, and when we considered renewals on the board as we always do, her name had come up as a definite ‘yes.’ ”

SeGraves said Fetters was highly respected as a person and as a businesswoman.

“Her opinions were held in high esteem,” SeGraves said. SeGraves said Fetters was instrumental in “guiding (Bill) to getting involved on the township’s zoning board of appeals.”

“His involvement is divine timing,” SeGraves said. “He has picked up the baton.”

“Pam will be missed,” SeGraves said.

Barbara Barnes said Fetters was her “best friend,” someone she saw as “somewhere between a mother-daughter relations and sisters.”

“She was quite the lady,” Barnes said of her friendship of 35 years with Fetters. “She had one of those personalities that age was never a thing with what she did. She was the same energetic person then as she was now. She was driven; the community was her family.”

Barnes said Fetters’ boyfriend, John Baron, “took real good care of her and let her be who she was.”

Fetters took over the Woodstock Wine and Cheese store in 1983. Barnes said the business was Fetters’ “joy.”

“She put all her knowledge and talent into the store,” Barnes said.

When she wasn’t tending to the store, Barnes said, Fetters was “always proud of her flowers, she loved her dogs, and she gave back to so many.”

“She lives on in so many people,” Barnes said. “She’s going to be missed, that’s for sure.”

A memorial gathering for Fetters is set for 2 p.m. May 11 at the Manitou Beach Marina, 9517 Devils Lake Highway.

Yvonne Tavtigan Szyperski

November 13, 1945 - March 23, 2021  (75)

Yvonne Marie Szyperski, age 75, died at home surrounded by her loving family on March 23, 2021 from Alzheimer's disease. Beloved wife of Thomas for 53 years. Loving Mother to Paul (Andrea), Katherine, Elizabeth (Richard), and Joseph (Amy). Adoring Mimi to Isabel, Thomas, Samuel, Victor, Emma, Eleanor, Isaac, Taft, Theodore, and Roman. Sister to Archel Sneider and June Bobak (Greg) and sister-in-law Mary (Lowell) Baumker. Fond aunt, cousin and friend to many.

Yvonne graduated from Maumee High School and the University of Toledo, with a Bachelor's degree in education. She taught several subjects at area high schools but always loved teaching history the most. Known for being a tough teacher, she took pride in her work and her expectations only matched her own work ethic.

After meeting on a blind date, she married Thomas Szyperski and together they raised their four children. It was never too hot or cold to sit through one of the hundreds of baseball or football games played by her sons. Never too early to call for help or advice and never the wrong time to go on an adventure. Together, Tom and Yvonne travelled the world, but found their greatest joy in hours spent together working in their garden. Yvonne never shied away from hard work and her home and yard were a reflection of her artistic eye and willingness to get her hands dirty.

As a mother, she celebrated each of her children's individual spirits. As always her expectations were high, but we were never compared and she showered each of us with exactly the right amount of tough love. We were never allowed to quit, never allowed to lie and never allowed to be lazy. Somehow, no matter what growing pain we faced, the refrain "they're just jealous because you're half Armenian" or "you'll feel better if you vacuum the family room" were always ready. She was fierce in her love for us, never shied away from a challenge, lived life on her terms and seemed to never be afraid.

Her greatest joy was spending time with her beloved grandchildren. Somehow she managed to share a unique bond with each of them, and all knew the glow of time spent with Mimi. Lunches on the lawn, jaunts to Target and during summer vacations in Michigan, her grandchildren were provide a lifetime of cherished memories.

Having watched her mother succumb to this terrible disease, Yvonne recognized the early signs of Alzheimer's 10 years ago. She faced this final chapter with unwavering dignity and we as a family have been humbled at the opportunity to care for her with the same level of love and compassion, she always showered on us.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Varkes and Rose Tavtigian; and her sister, Katherine Coburn.

Memorial services will be private. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to Hospice of Northwest Ohio or the Alzheimer's Association in her name.
